16 Inch Floating Shelves with Hidden Brackets, Sorbus Maple
What we like
The listing gives one clear weight limit, 22 pounds per shelf, and a shallow 5.5 inch depth that keeps the strain on your wall low.
Worth knowing
“Maple” is a printed finish on MDF, not real maple, and MDF doesn’t belong right beside a shower despite the bathroom suggestions.

Why we picked it
These are small, shallow shelves, and that’s what makes them easy to live with. Each one is 16.25 inches long, 5.5 inches deep and 1.5 inches thick, and the listing gives one weight limit and sticks to it everywhere: 22 pounds per shelf. That’s worth crediting, because plenty of shelf listings quote a bigger number in the title than in the details.
What 22 pounds means on the wall depends on where the weight sits. A floating shelf works like a lever: the further out the weight is, the harder it pulls the top screws away from the wall. Spread 22 pounds evenly across this shelf and the load acts at the middle of its depth, 2.75 inches out, which puts about 60 inch-pounds of turning force on the fixings. Stack it all along the front edge and that doubles to about 120. The shallow depth is the real advantage here. A shelf twice as deep carrying the same weight would put twice the strain on the same screws.
The stud situation is the next thing to plan around. Wall studs in most US homes sit 16 inches apart, measured center to center. The hidden bracket in the photos is shorter than the shelf, so it can catch one stud at most, and the remaining screws will go into drywall anchors. That’s normal for a shelf this size, but it’s a reason to use good anchors rather than the cheapest ones, and to keep the heaviest items over the stud end.
At 5.5 inches deep, the shelf suits things that are small or upright: trade paperbacks standing on end, which are typically about 5.5 by 8.5 inches, spice jars, small plants, candles and photo frames. Large hardcovers lying flat and dinner plates will overhang the edge. Spread across its 16.25 inch length, 22 pounds works out to roughly 1.35 pounds per inch, so a row of paperbacks is fine and a row of heavy cookbooks is pushing it.
Two wording points are worth clearing up. The title says “Maple Wood,” but the material is engineered wood, specifically MDF wrapped in PVC with a maple-look finish. That’s a sensible, lightweight build at this price, but it isn’t solid maple. The listing also recommends these for bathrooms several times. MDF holds up fine with ordinary humidity as long as its wrap is intact, but if water gets in through an edge or a screw hole, it can swell. Above a toilet or across the room from the shower is fine. Right next to the shower head isn’t.

The honest take
What we like
- One clear weight limit, 22 lb per shelf, repeated consistently across the listing
- Shallow 5.5 in depth keeps turning force on the wall low
- Fully hidden bracket gives a clean floating look
- Lightweight and easy to hang, with hardware included
Worth knowing
- “Maple Wood” is a printed finish on MDF, not solid maple
- The bracket can reach one stud at most, so good drywall anchors matter
- Too shallow for plates or large hardcovers lying flat
- MDF can swell if water gets in, so keep it away from direct shower spray
