Rod Pocket Blackout Curtains — NICETOWN Black, 42"×63" Pair

Rod pocket heading Black yarn middle layer Height adjustable

What we like

Rod pocket gathers tight to the rod, so less light escapes over the top than with grommets.

Worth knowing

Rod pocket curtains don’t slide easily — these are better left closed than opened daily.

Why we picked it

Every other curtain we’ve covered uses grommets — metal rings punched through the top that slide along the rod. This one uses a rod pocket: a sewn channel the rod threads through. It’s a genuinely different heading, and the choice matters more than it looks.

What rod pocket does better: it gathers the fabric tight against the rod with no gaps. Grommets leave open spaces between each ring, and light comes straight through them at the top of the window. If you’ve ever had blackout curtains that still let a bright band of light in above the rod, that’s why. A rod pocket closes that gap.

What it does worse: sliding. Fabric bunched around a rod creates friction, so these don’t glide open and closed the way grommets do. For a bedroom window you open in the morning and close at night, that’s mild. For a patio door you pass through constantly, it’s a daily irritation.

So the honest guidance is: rod pocket for windows you mostly leave dressed, grommets for curtains you’re constantly moving.

This listing also explains something the other NICETOWN pages don’t — how the triple weave actually works. The middle of the three layers is woven from black yarn, and that dark core is what blocks the light. The outer layers give you the colour you see and the texture you feel. It’s why unlined triple weave can achieve darkness without a coating: the blocking layer is inside the fabric rather than glued to the back.

One useful tip in the listing worth repeating: if the panels come up slightly short, you can hang them with rings and hooks instead of threading the rod through the pocket, which gains you up to about 3 inches of height. That’s a genuine fix for the common problem of a curtain that’s an inch or two shy of the floor.

The honest take

What we like

  • Rod pocket seals the gap above the rod that grommets leave open
  • Explains that a black yarn middle layer does the blocking — rare technical clarity
  • Rings-and-hooks trick gains up to 3″ if the drop is slightly short
  • Unlined three-layer construction, so no coating to crack or off-gas
  • Black is the colourway where this fabric performs best

Worth knowing

  • Rod pocket curtains don’t slide easily — poor choice for daily opening
  • Threading a rod through the pocket is fiddlier to install than grommets
  • 63″ is a short drop; measure rod to hem before ordering
  • Black absorbs solar heat, so the fabric warms in direct sun
  • No certification or independent testing published

No gap above the rod
