Why we picked it

Every other mirror we have covered is a rectangle. This one is not, and shape is the reason to consider it.

A scalloped arch introduces curves into a room that is usually all straight lines. Bathrooms in particular are grids: rectangular tiles, a rectangular vanity, a rectangular window, square edges everywhere. A curved top interrupts that, and because it is the only curve in the room it draws the eye without needing colour or ornament to do it.

The arch also softens the reflection’s outline. A hard-cornered rectangle reads as a functional object; a curved silhouette reads as decorative, which is why arched mirrors turn up in entryways and above mantels as often as over vanities.

This is the best specified mirror listing we have covered, and the details are worth going through because most listings give none of them.

4mm HD float glass. Float glass is formed on molten tin, producing genuine flatness, and flatness is what determines whether a reflection is true rather than subtly warped. The 4mm thickness matters too, since thinner glass flexes slightly when mounted and that flex introduces distortion no matter how flat the glass started.

9mm moisture-proof MDF backing. A mirror’s silvering is on the back of the glass, and moisture reaching it is what causes the black spotting and edge creep you see on old bathroom mirrors. A sealed thick backing is the defence against that, and it is a specification most listings skip entirely.

Stainless steel rather than generic metal. Where other listings say rust proof without naming a material, this one names it. Stainless resists corrosion inherently rather than through a coating that can be scratched through.

Now the two constraints worth planning around.

First, vertical mount only. The arch has a top and a bottom, so unlike the rectangular mirrors in this category there is no option to turn it. Whatever wall it goes on has to suit a portrait shape.

Second, 28 pounds is heavy. The listing frames that as a quality signal, which is fair, but the practical consequence is that this needs real fixings. Pre-attached D-rings are the right hanging hardware, since they spread load across two points, but D-rings into plasterboard plugs will not hold 28 pounds reliably over time. Find studs, or use proper heavy-duty anchors rated well above the weight.

At 30 by 40 inches, this suits a wide single vanity and gives what the listing accurately calls a head and shoulders view.

The honest take

What we like

  • A curved silhouette interrupts the grid of straight lines a bathroom usually is
  • Best specified mirror we have covered, with glass, backing and weight all given
  • 4mm float glass is thick enough not to flex and distort when mounted
  • 9mm sealed backing protects the silvering from bathroom humidity
  • Stainless steel is named rather than a vague rust proof claim
  • D-rings spread the load across two fixing points

Worth knowing

  • Vertical mount only, unlike the rectangular mirrors here
  • 28 pounds needs studs or heavy duty anchors, not plasterboard plugs
  • A shaped mirror is harder to replace like for like later
  • Frame depth and D-ring spacing are not published
  • Matte black shows dust and water spots more than a brushed finish

The only curve in a room of straight lines
