Why we picked it

Copper-free glass is the specification here that most listings never mention, and it is the one that determines how a bathroom mirror ages.

Traditional mirrors are silvered, then given a protective copper layer, then painted. Copper corrodes when moisture reaches it, and that corrosion is exactly what causes the black spotting and creeping dark edges you see on older bathroom mirrors. It is why mirrors in wet rooms tend to fail from the perimeter inward.

Copper-free construction removes that layer entirely, replacing it with corrosion-resistant coatings. In a dry hallway the difference is academic. In a bathroom taking daily steam, it is the single biggest factor in whether the mirror still looks clean in ten years.

At 5mm the glass is thicker than most too, which matters for reflection accuracy since thin glass flexes slightly when mounted and any flex distorts the image.

The irregular shape is the other reason to consider it. There is no frame at all here: the glass itself is cut to an organic outline, with the backlight glowing around its edge onto the wall. That gives a soft halo that follows the curves rather than a hard rectangle of light.

Frameless also means nothing to collect water or dust along a bottom edge, which is a genuine maintenance advantage over framed mirrors in a wet room.

Now the important functional point: this is backlit only. There is no front-facing light band on the mirror’s face.

That difference matters more than it sounds. A backlight throws light onto the wall behind the mirror, producing a beautiful ambient halo and no illumination on your face. For atmosphere and for finding the room at night, it is lovely. For shaving, makeup or anything needing accuracy, you will still be relying on your ceiling light, which is the source that casts the downward shadows a lit mirror is usually bought to solve.

If a mirror that lights your face is the goal, a front-lit model is the one to look for. If you want ambience and already have good vanity lighting, this does that job beautifully.

Separating the defogger from the lights is a sensible design decision. The defogger is a heating element and draws considerably more power than LEDs, so being able to run the lights without it, or clear the mirror without lighting the room, is both safer and cheaper to run than a combined control.

The 50,000 hour LED rating is around 17 years at eight hours a day, which is realistic for quality LEDs. As with any lit mirror, the LEDs are integrated rather than replaceable, so that figure is effectively the product’s lifespan.

Installation supports plug-in or hardwired, and works with a regular wall switch. As with any electrical mirror, settle the power supply before deciding placement.

The honest take

What we like

  • Copper free glass resists the black edge creep that ruins bathroom mirrors
  • 5mm glass is thick enough not to flex and distort when mounted
  • Frameless, so no bottom edge collecting water and dust
  • The halo follows the organic outline rather than a hard rectangle
  • Defogger controlled separately from the lights, which is safer and cheaper to run
  • Mounts either orientation, unlike the arched mirror

Worth knowing

  • Backlit only, so it puts no light on your face for shaving or makeup
  • You will still rely on ceiling lighting for accurate grooming
  • LEDs are integrated, so end of life means replacing the mirror
  • Needs a power supply, which dictates where it can go
  • No weight, mounting hardware detail or safety certification published
