Why we picked it

Nesting tables solve a problem a single coffee table cannot: a room that needs floor space most of the time and surface space occasionally.

Tucked together they occupy one footprint. Pulled apart you have two surfaces that can sit at opposite ends of a sofa, beside separate chairs, or wherever people happen to be. When the room empties, they go back to one.

That flexibility is worth more in a small living room than any amount of clever storage, because the constraint in a small room is almost always the walkway rather than the shelf.

The nesting works because the small table is shorter as well as narrower, at 15.7 inches across and 15.7 inches tall against 23.6 by 17.7. A set where the small table matched the large one in height would not slide underneath, which is a detail worth checking on any nesting set.

At 13.2 pounds for the pair they are light enough to move one-handed, which matters, since a nesting set you cannot be bothered to reposition is just two tables.

Now the scale, and this is the thing to be clear about before buying.

The large table is 23.6 inches across. Every main coffee table we have covered runs from 35.8 to 47 inches. Applying the usual guidance of a table around two thirds the sofa length, a 23.6 inch top suits a seat of roughly 31 to 36 inches, which is an armchair rather than a sofa.

Put the two together and the combined surface is about 630 square inches, roughly 62 percent of a single 36 inch round table. So this is not a smaller version of a coffee table. It is a pair of side tables that can serve as a coffee table in a small apartment or in front of a loveseat.

Bought with that expectation it works well. Bought as the centerpiece for a three seat sofa, it will look lost.

The listing gives a panel thickness, which almost none do. At 0.59 inches with a 99 pound capacity, you know what you are getting rather than inferring it from a photograph.

The material is particle board rather than MDF, and the difference is worth knowing. Particle board is made from larger wood chips pressed together; MDF uses fine fibers and is denser, smoother and stronger at the edges and around screws. Particle board is lighter and cheaper, which suits a table designed to be picked up, but it is the weaker of the two where fixings go in.

One claim we would not follow. The listing lists outdoor use among the suggested settings. Particle board and moisture are a poor combination: it swells, and once the board has taken up water the surface lifts and does not recover.

A scratch-resistant and waterproof top finish protects against spills wiped up promptly. It does not make the panel weatherproof, and the exposed underside and edges are where water gets in. Treat this as indoor furniture, or accept a short life on a balcony.
