Silver coating is a specification most mirror listings never mention, and there is a real difference behind it.

Mirrors are made by depositing a reflective metal onto the back of glass, and there are two common choices. Aluminium is cheaper and reflects roughly 90 percent of visible light, with a slight cool cast. Silver reflects around 95 percent and renders colour more accurately, particularly warm tones.

In practice that means skin tones look truer in a silver-coated mirror, and the reflection is fractionally brighter. It is not a dramatic difference, but it is a real one, and a listing that specifies which metal was used is telling you more than one that says only high definition.

Now the size question, which is the practical decision. Round mirrors are unusually sensitive to scale because there is no long dimension to absorb an error.

The working rule for a mirror above a vanity is that it should span roughly two thirds to three quarters of the vanity width. So 24 inches suits a vanity around 32 to 36 inches, which is the standard single-basin size in most homes. That makes this the default fit rather than a statement choice.

Go up to 30 inches and you need a 40 to 45 inch vanity to carry it, or you accept that the mirror dominates. Go smaller than 24 and a round mirror starts reading as an accent rather than something you actually use.

Above a console or in an entryway the rule is looser, since there is no basin dictating the centre line, but the same proportion still looks right.

The no light leak claim refers to how the frame meets the glass. On cheaper mirrors the frame sits proud of the mirror edge with a visible gap, and light passing behind shows through as a bright rim. A frame that wraps the edge closes that, so the mirror reads as a solid disc rather than a disc with a halo.

It also protects the vulnerable part. The silvering is on the back of the glass and its edge is where moisture attacks first, so a wrapped frame is doing structural work as well as visual.

Aluminium alloy is the right frame material for a bathroom, since it cannot rust at all rather than relying on a coating that can be scratched through.

As with several mirrors in this category, the listing gives no glass thickness, backing material or weight. At 24 inches that matters less than it would on a larger mirror, but it still means fixings are a judgement call rather than a specification.
