Why we picked it
Every other curtain we have covered blocks light one of two ways: a dark layer woven into the fabric, or a coating bonded to the back. Velvet does it a third way, through sheer density. The pile is a forest of short fibres standing upright, and light entering has to pass through all of them. Very little makes it out the other side.
That density has a second effect that matters more in a curtain than people expect. Sound absorption depends on mass and surface texture, and velvet has both. It will not soundproof a room, no curtain will, but a dense velvet panel does noticeably more to soften traffic noise and reduce echo than a flat woven panel of the same size. If the room has hard floors and bare walls, it will make a difference you can hear.
Velvet also does something to colour that flat fabric cannot. The pile catches light at different angles across the surface, so navy reads deep and almost black in shadow and shifts toward a richer blue where light falls on it. That variation is what makes velvet look expensive, and it is why the same navy in a flat polyester would look considerably duller.
At 96 inches, this is the longest drop we have covered. That opens up two things: genuinely tall windows, and the ceiling-height rod mount that makes a standard room look taller. Most ranges stop at 84 inches, which forces a compromise if you want to hang high.
The trade-off is weight, and it is worth taking seriously. Velvet is dense, and two 96 inch panels are a lot of fabric. Lightweight tension rods and small plastic brackets are not built for this. Check that your rod is metal, that the brackets are screwed into studs or use proper wall anchors, and add a centre support bracket if the span is wide. A curtain rod pulling out of plasterboard is a genuinely common failure with heavy panels.
Two smaller notes. Rust proof grommets are worth having on a heavy panel, since the grommets carry the full load and ordinary metal ones can corrode and stain the fabric over time. And velvet holds dust in its pile more than flat fabric, so expect to vacuum or shake these out more often than you would a woven panel.
